Moving isn’t easy, and people know it. Believe it or not, moving is ranked as the most stressful life event in the US, even ahead of divorce for 45% of respondents.
Well, that’s only because there are a lot of moving parts involved. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be as stressful if you’re confident that you’ve covered all your bases.
Let’s talk about everything you need to do before moving day to help ease your mind!
One of the biggest reasons moving is so stressful is all of the phone calls. There’s the realtor or the new landlord calling you every few hours of the day, it seems, and then you have to make so many others.
With a handy list, you can easily check them off one at a time and forget about them. Your list should include:
The list goes on. Include anybody you’ll need to call for help, change of services, or anything else ahead of the move.
Of course, we all know to change our address with the post office, but it doesn’t stop there. Hop on your laptop or smartphone and change your address for:
Make a list, check it twice, and fill out all of the necessary forms before the move so you can just worry about unpacking after move-in day.
Most people don’t choose to hire packing services, instead choosing to do it themselves. If that’s the case, develop a system and a timeline for packing as far in advance as possible.
You can set weekly quotas for yourself in the last month before the move or if you choose to wait until the end, daily quotas. Always try to pack what you won’t be using first.
If you want to keep similar items together, you may want to avoid packing lightly-used kitchen equipment too early then. However, you can also pack them separately and have an “important” box to open on moving day. Of course, we’re only using kitchen supplies as an example, but the logic can be applied to anything!
Figure out a system and try to make it as easy as possible. Consider what should be in the back of the truck (anything away from the main entrance) and stack your boxes accordingly.
We know you’re busy packing, but it is worth it to do a deep clean of your home. You may find important items you missed and be able to sell the home for easier.
Once you’re packed, this won’t take too long. Simply take a couple of hours to clean the walls, floors, doors, windows, and storage spaces before you leave. This won’t take too much time and it will help keep your mind at ease, especially if you have a security deposit!
If you have a yard or other outdoor space, take a quick sweep to make sure you’re not leaving anything behind. Oven thermometers, basement dehumidifiers, outdoor equipment, bathroom products, and other items are often left behind!
Take a bag out of your moving supplies and pack it for the first night after the move, so you don’t have to worry about unpacking anything. Any cooking supplies, clothes, toiletries, and anything else you’ll need for the first 24 hours should be packed.
Have enough to get you through the next afternoon in case you and your family are too tired or sore from moving day. Keep this separate from everything else, and store it in your car if you have movers helping you. This way, you won’t lose it!
If you have a “homeless” night because your lease ended on the last day of the month and your new lease starts the next, then remember to pack enough for two nights!
Make sure you have all of your documentation handy, including everything you’ll need for closing or for your new landlord. From there, ensure that every box and piece of furniture is going to the right room to make for as easy of an unpacking job as possible.
Once everything is organized, you should be prepared for moving day. However, you can still make it easier!
If you really want to make moving day as easy as possible, then hire the right moving company for help. Professional moving services will help ensure you get everything from one point to another as safely and efficiently as possible, and it will allow you to focus your attention on everything else on this list.
On the day before moving day, give your moving company a call and double-check that everything is ready to go the next day. Then, you’ll have peace of mind going into the big day!
Also, ensure that the moving company offers the services you need. This may include assembling or disassembling furniture, packing services, or anything else. Avoid any unwanted surprises on moving day.
Remember, moving day doesn’t have to be as stressful as people make it out to be. It can be as simple as making a few phone calls and settling in!
