What Should I Do With My Old Rolex?

Do you know what Sir Edmund Hillary and his team were wearing when they became the first humans to summit the peak of Mount Everest? Beneath all those protective layers of clothing, each man wore a shiny Rolex watch on their wrist.

Rolex has been synonymous with luxury and greatness since the company was founded over 100 years ago. Today it’s a common sponsor of high-end sports including yachting, motor racing, and equestrian events.

If you have an old Rolex at home, no doubt you admire its beauty and craftsmanship. But if you don’t wear it anymore (or you need to make money fast), you might consider selling that Rolex for cash.

Here’s everything you need to know to sell a Rolex and get the best possible price.

Locate the Reference Number & Serial Number

First, you need to know the exact model of your watch.

Locate the reference number, also called the model number or style number. This is a string of numbers and letters that describe the color, style, and metal of the item. Remove the bracelet on the 12 o’clock side and look for the number engraved on the case.

Next, you’ll want to locate your watch’s unique serial number. If the watch was made before 2004, you’ll find it engraved on the case on the 6 o’clock side (again, you’ll need to remove the band to find it). For models made after 2004, you’ll find the serial number on the rehaute of the watch’s case.

Note: If you have the original paperwork, these numbers will also be listed there.

Research the Fair Market Rolex Value

Google your reference number to see what similar models are fetching. Be sure never to disclose your serial number, as there are many scams for fake Rolex watches.

Once you have a ballpark idea of your watch’s value, consider its condition. Is it in good working condition, or is it scratched up and damaged? Obviously, the better the condition, the more you can expect to make from it.

Find a Buyer for Your Old Rolex

Now that you’ve done your due diligence, it’s time to find a Rolex buyer for your watch. If you have them, be sure to include all original items that go with the watch, including the papers, box, manuals, and extra bracelet links.

Bring the purchase receipt to an appraiser or jeweler to give them a better idea of its current value. If you did any maintenance or repair work, bring along those receipts and records as well.

Keep in mind that there’s a difference between the market value and retail value. If you sell your old Rolex to a jewelry dealer, they’ll subtract the value of any needed cleaning or repairs before they resell it for a profit.

Turn Your Rolex Watch Into Cash

Rolex watches are luxury items that retain much of their value over time. If you’re ready to turn that old Rolex into a nice paycheck, follow the tips listed above!
