What Are the Different Types of Servers That Exist Today?

Ah, servers. Without these constantly-running machines, the internet we know would not exist. You can get full root vds access to a dedicated server on virtual machine technology. Even many file-sharing methods that we know wouldn’t work. Back in 1969, it would have been impossible for the two colleges behind Arpanet to know that their network would serve as the base for countless servers to come.

But what are the different types of servers that you can find and use today? What are the best servers to learn how to use if you work in the IT industry? Here’s what you need to know.

The Web Server

The web server is what’s letting you view this page right now. These servers take “GET” and “POST” requests, translating both server-side and client-side scripts into the UX that you see these days.

That’s right, every video you view, every website you visit exists because these servers work tirelessly to transmit and translate lines upon lines of code.

The DNS Server

Back in the old days, you used to have to memorize a site’s IP address. This could prove difficult if you don’t work in the IT industry or have a photographic memory. Fortunately, Domain Name Service servers translate IP addresses into user-friendly names and vice-versa.

This is what makes it possible for you to search a website by its name. When you encounter a DNS error, it’s because the DNS server either can’t find or is temporarily unable to translate the IP address to its corresponding name. Most often, this happens due to a connection failure on the user’s end.

The RDP Server

Ever since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020, those working in the IT department have been slammed with requests to configure these types of servers. RDP stands for Remote Desk Protocol. As you might expect, these servers play a key role in organizations that allow working from home.

Do you work for a company that needs dedicated servers to support your WFH employees? If so, visit websites like RDP Arena to check it out.

The FTP Server

FTP servers have one purpose, and one purpose alone: To transfer files. These connections, by default, aren’t encrypted but you can purchase more secure options.

Once users authenticate themselves, they are free to upload and download files through this type of server. They can also browse the files as they wish.

File Servers

Any time you browse through your computer for a specific file, especially where shared computers are involved, you’re using a file server. These modern servers, in essence, map files onto network drives that users can then use their home computers to access.

These servers make it easy to upload, download, and share files between users in the same workspace.
