What Are the Different Types of Car Speakers That Exist Today?

Have you ever seen the visualization of a sound wave?

Each particular frequency displays itself as a kaleidoscopic pattern distinct from the patterns of all other wavelengths. The takeaway? Every aspect of a song is important.

This includes everything from the background noise of a recording studio to the in-breath of a singer before she belts a chorus. All of these things add nuance to our daily lives, and the car is where most of that relationship takes place.

That’s why it’s key to understand the types of car speakers and what they do. We’re going to explore the speakers and components of your vehicle’s audio system today, giving you some motivation to make improvements wherever necessary.

Understanding Types of Car Speakers

There is all manner of speakers & components available to you when it comes to car audio. You might not need every single thing depending on your musical interests and preferences, though.

We’ll look at the key things today.

Outside of speakers, there are stereo decks and amplifiers. The stereo deck is the receiver and equalizer of the audio frequency. That means it takes the signal from your antenna (or phone) and directs it to the amplifier.

It also has tools you can use to adjust bass, treble, mids, and panning options. The deck translates the frequency into an electrical signal and sends it through the amp, which boosts the signal. That allows you to listen to clear music at higher or lower volumes.

Subwoofers

Subwoofers deal with the lowest range of sound frequencies. A deep cello in a concert hall or the 808s of your favorite pop group both fall into this category.

Standard stereos produce quality low-end sound only in certain volume ranges. If you turn the sound up too high, your low end will cut out. Old vehicles are prone to cutting out, so subwoofers improve things drastically.

Mids (Door Speakers)

Middle range frequencies come from door speakers. The middle range is where the majority of frequencies in music exist. All of those sounds mixing together in the same range, though, leads to a lot of complexity that some speakers can’t handle.

If you’re investing in speakers, door speakers will make the most significant difference.

Tweeters

Tweeters are speakers that deal with high-end frequencies. As the name suggests, these are the frequencies that birds emit.

A lot of fine points in music exist in the high end. Things like the brush of a bow on a string, the trebly breath of a singer, and the toe-tapping of someone in the ensemble will stand out more with tweeters.

Further, high notes and instruments will come through clearly without cutting out if you invest in tweeters.
