Tony Awards Issues ‘No Violence’ Policy After Will Smith’s Oscars Slap

Tony Awards producers issued a “strict no violence policy” following the onstage Oscars slap by the actor Will Smith.

“In the event of an incident, the perpetrator will be removed from the event immediately,” an excerpt of the letter released by the producers reads.

The new rule comes weeks after Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. Smith won an Oscar but he was then banned from the Academy for 10 years.

“The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote.

Smith had already resigned.

“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
