The Complete and Only Eyelash Extension Maintenance Guide

The beauty industry generates more than $100 billion in revenue worldwide. It’s an industry that attracts all types of people, which is why it will continue its growth.

One of the most popular beauty trends you’ll find is eyelash extensions. Many people have discovered this trend and use it on a daily basis.

However, before you jump on this trend, you’ll first need to learn about eyelash extension maintenance. This can ensure that you’ll be ready for what comes with these beautiful lashes.

To learn more, keep reading below.

The Importance of Eyelash Extension Maintenance

You most likely got eyelash extensions because you want them to last. Having to deal with your eyelashes every day can be tedious, which is why last extensions are often the answer.

Perhaps you wanted to lengthen your lashes or give them more volume. Maybe you use the best eyelash growth serum but want even longer lashes.

Whether you got them for a special occasion or you get them done every few weeks, eyelash extension maintenance is absolutely essential.

You cannot simply get lash extensions and expect them to look perfect every day without caring for them. If you don’t care for them, they can easily fall out or start losing volume within days.

Lash extension maintenance can help keep your eyelashes clean, which will help to prevent eye infections. It will also save you money because they will look nice for longer, preventing you from having to get them done twice as often.

The Basics of Eyelash Extension Maintenance

Knowing what to do to keep your lash extensions maintained is just as important as knowing what not to do. Like any good investment, it’s only worth it if it lasts as long as it should, and it’s up to you to put the time in to keep them as nice as possible.

Let’s explore the basics of what to do and what not to do when it comes to eyelash maintenance.

Avoid Water for 48 Hours

The key to getting your lash extensions to last as long as possible is allowing the glue to set in. To do so, you need to avoid getting your eyes wet for at least 48 hours.

When you go in for your lash appointment, it’s recommended that you do so without any mascara on. This will make the process easier, and it will allow you to avoid having to get your eyes wet after the appointment.

If you need to wash your face or remove makeup, use an oil-free cleanser, and avoid wearing eye makeup as much as possible or that 48-hour period.

If you get the glue wet too early, it can make the bond break, making it much easier for your extensions to fall out prematurely.

Wash Them Regularly

If you want beautiful eyelashes, you need them to be clean. After the 48-hour period, you’ll want to wash your lashes regularly, generally every three days.

To do so, you’ll want to use a soft bristle eyelash brush and a specific eyelash extension cleanser or distilled water. While in the shower, you should also let the water run down over your eyelashes, which will also cleanse them.

Avoid Oil-Based Products

Oil-based products can dissolve the eyelash glue, so you’ll want to avoid any makeup removers or facial soaps that are oil-based.

Instead, you can use gel or water-based, but you should still avoid washing your eyelashes unless you are using a specific cleanser made for them.

Avoid Waterproof Products

Waterproof products are made to stay on, which makes them difficult to take off unless you use oil-based products. Because of this, you need to avoid them as much as possible.

The best eyelash extensions will substitute for eyeliner and mascara, so you don’t need to wear those anyway. However, if you do choose to wear eye makeup with your extensions, make sure to select products that can be removed with water.

Don’t Curl Them

Everyone in the beauty industry loves a good eyelash curler, but it isn’t necessary or recommended when you have eyelash extensions.

If you do curl your extensions, you may end up with a curl that won’t go away. Because they aren’t your natural lashes, they will keep a curl which could end up looking off and unnatural.

Instead, avoid the eyelash curler until you get your extensions removed.

Regularly Brush Them

Instead of curling them, you should regularly brush your lash extensions. Every morning, brush the tips of your lashes using a clean and dry mascara brush.

You should also use your finger to support your lashes as your brush. If you don’t want to spend money on a new mascara brush, the next time your mascara runs out, clean that brush and set it aside to use for your extensions.

Do Not Pick at Them

If you want to keep feeling beautiful with your eyelash extensions, do not pick at them, pull them out, or rub your eyes. This will not only damage your extensions but could also cause damage to your natural lashes.

Avoid touching them at all except when you brush them or clean them. If you pick at them too much and cause too much damage, when you go in for your fill, your lash technician could end up charging you extra.

Try a Satin Pillowcase

It is recommended that you sleep on your back when you get eyelash extensions, as sleeping on your stomach or side could crush them and cause damage.

However, if this seems uncomfortable or unavoidable to you, you can instead invest in a satin pillowcase. This will help preserve your extensions, as cotton pillowcases can cause snagging and end up pulling them out while you sleep.

Keep Your Eyelash Extensions Beautiful With These Tips

Doing eyelash extension maintenance is more important than many people think. If you are considering getting lash extensions, ensure you are ready to care for them properly.

If you do, you will have beautiful lashes for weeks to come.
