Ready to Take a Dog Vacation With Fido? Here’s How to Get Started

68% of American households own a pet, and 38.4% of them own a dog. Based on these statistics, we’d bet you have a pup too!

You love to bring your four-legged friend everywhere you go, whether it’s to the park, shopping mall, or your friends’ houses. But when it comes to trips, you’ve always left Fido home.

You can’t stand being away from them for so long though. So why not take your dog on vacation? It’s totally doable, so long as you prepare!

Keep reading to see how you can take a safe and fun dog vacation with your pet.

Download Dog-Friendly Apps

You want to make sure your puppy isn’t excluded from too many activities you’re doing on your vacation. So having some dog-friendly apps on your phone can be handy!

Not only can these apps show you where there are pet-friendly hotels, restaurants, and attractions, but they can also point out where the nearest emergency animal hospital is, should you need one.

Research Pet-Friendly Hotels

Some hotels won’t accept pets, period, so you need to avoid those. But while some will accept Fido, they’ll tack a fee on top. And if you’re traveling on a budget, that can quickly add up!

There are plenty of places that’ll take your cute and trained dog for free; you just need to look harder for them. Some examples include Red Roof Inn and Motel 6.

Know Where the Nearest Pet Hospitals Are

While some dog-friendly apps will tell you where the nearest pet hospitals are, don’t count on the apps to always work or be correct. Check out the local area beforehand so you always know where you can take your pup should they get ill or injured.

Make Copies of Your Dog’s Documents

If you’re traveling across borders, then you’ll want to bring your pup’s health records. You don’t want to risk losing the originals, so take pictures to show or photocopy them.

Even if you’re staying within the US, it’s better to be safe than to be sorry. These documents don’t take up a lot of room anyway!

Bring the Right Stuff

The stuff you bring for your dog vacation can make or break your trip. Make sure you have a good time by packing all the essentials.

Some ideas include a leash, harness (like a Joyride harness), food, water, collapsible bowls, a pet bed, toys, and a carrier. You should also bring any medications they’re on, as well as flea and tick medicine so your dog stays pest-free!

Have Fun on Your Dog Vacation

With enough preparation, you can have a nice dog vacation with your furry pal.

Make sure to bring their important documents, as well as all the necessities and dog accessories, such as food, water, medications, leashes, toys, and a bed. And research dog-friendly hotels, restaurants, and activities. That way, you’ll make the most of your time while on vacation!
