How to Unclog a Clogged Drain

While cleaning the drain doesn’t sound like a particularly fun thing to do, experts recommend you do so on a regular basis. But even those who do so might come across a clogged drain here and there.

So how do you unclog a clogged drain? What are the best methods for unclogging a clogged drain and how do you know which is the right one?

That’s what we’re here to look at today. Read on to find out more about how to unclog a clogged drain.

Dish Soap Method

One of the most common reasons why a drain gets clogged is through grease accumulation. Grease often congeals in your pipes and clogs up your sink drain.

A great method for clearing out your clogged drain is through dish soap and some hot water. You simply clean out your sink, squirt some dish soap down your drain, and let it drip to the grease spot.

Plunger Method

Believe it or not, a plunger is a great way to use suction to get some of that gunk out of your sink pipes. Make sure you aren’t using the same plunger you use for the toilet and clean it out thoroughly beforehand.

Just let the water run in your sink until there’s about an inch of water, then use the plunger as you would for a clogged toilet.

Baking Soda and Boiling Water Method

Baking soda naturally gets through grime and gunk. It’s a great solution for those who want to unclog their drain without using chemicals. Prepare some baking soda, vinegar, and hot water to get this started.

Pour boiling water down the drain first. Then combine the baking soda, vinegar, and more boiling water before pouring that mixture down the drain.

Wire Hanger Method

If you have a solid piece of gunk in your drain, you can use a wire hanger to try and get it out. Use some pliers to straighten out a hanger while keeping the hooks on one end.

Stick that down your pipes until you feel the gunk in your drain. Twist it around and pull it out to clean off the hanger. Do this until your drain is completely cleared.

Should You Do It Yourself?

There’s also the question of whether you should call your local plumbers to do this for you. There’s nothing wrong with calling on experts to handle your clogged drains.

When you hire a plumber, they’ll know exactly how to unclog a clogged drain no matter the situation. They’ll also have the right tools to unclog your drains easily and quickly.
