How to Level an RV

RVing is a fantastic way to get in touch with nature, and over 65 million Americans plan to travel in an RV this year.

If you’re new to RVing, you’ll need to know the ins and outs of learning how to level an RV. Doing this allows your RV to function at its best and keeps you comfortable during your camping experience.

Keep reading this RV leveling guide to learn everything you need to know!

How to Level an RV

If you don’t level your RV, your camping experience will quickly become a hassle. Food and other items can easily slip off your tables or counters. In older RVs, it can cause refrigerators to leak and stop working when they’re at an angle. Worse yet, it can also interfere with your sleep.

It’s important to realize that not all RVs have auto-leveling systems. Newer RVs are more likely to have this. You can view this website to check out the newer RVs on the market today.

The steps to leveling an RV include the following:

Gather Your Supplies

You’ll need to gather the right tools for RV leveling before you hit the road, which includes:

  • Leveling blocks or 2 x 6 boards
  • Hitch jack
  • Stabilizer jacks
  • A digital or bubble level
  • Wheel chocks to keep your wheels from moving

If you want to embrace technology more, you can try something like the LevelMatePRO. This tool has a digital accelerometer that assists you with leveling an RV. It will tell you how much your level is off down to the centimeter.

Choose a Flat Location

When possible, try finding the flattest spot to park your RV. The more level area you choose, the easier it will be to level your RV perfectly.

You might have to drive around a bit to accomplish this, but it’s well worth it in the end.

Level From Side-To-Side

You’ll want to level an RV from side to side before you unhitch the trailer. Place the leveler on the front part of the trailer, so you know what side needs raising.

If you have a motorhome, you can place the level on a table inside to see how level it is.

Next, you’ll need to place leveling blocks or boards behind the wheels that need raising. Back the trailer onto the blocks and double-check how level it is. You may need to repeat this process a few times.

Stabilize the RV

Once you get your RV as level as possible, it’s time to secure everything into place. To do this, you’ll need to place the wheel chocks on the tires to ensure your RV can’t move in any direction.

If you don’t take the time to do this, your RV can move out of place, making everything uneven once again.

It also prevents your RV from rolling away. Remember, an RV is heavy, and it doesn’t take much of an uneven slope to send your RV flying.

Leveling Your RV

Now that you know how to level an RV, your next camping trip will be a breeze.
