A target audience is important because it allows you to answer important questions about your strategies. Some of these questions include:

  • Where and when does my target audience hang out online?
  • What type of content do they often engage with?
  • What makes them buy products?

If you can’t think of your target audience, you might want to invest in a survey to find out who engages with your brand. What you don’t want to do is make your target audience everyone.

Every business owner wants to appeal to the highest number of potential customers out there. But, if you target everyone, you’ll end up making bland content that falls flat with most demographics.

Research Keywords and Topics

Now that you know your target audience, you can start thinking of keywords and topics that will appeal to them. This process shouldn’t simply be guesswork. Instead, you should look at seed keywords to make topics for blogs.

These are the keywords that you’ll craft into blog content and consider when writing blog headlines. Let’s say you run a baking website. Your seed keywords might look something like this:

  • Cakes
  • Pastries
  • Bread
  • Desserts
  • Cookies
  • Brownies

Once you have these seed keywords, plug them into a keyword explorer. This is an app that takes your keywords and gives you blog topic ideas that match what people are searching for.

In our example, a keyword explorer might suggest content titles like, “How to Make the Best Cakes” or “Ten Types of New Cookies You Need to Try.” From there, you can pick and choose which keywords best apply to your business.

Organize a Content Calendar

Now, it’s time to organize a content calendar. You should first consider how often you’ll post and when you’ll post. Your resources will usually determine this.

If you have a small operation, you might only be able to post a few times a month. But, if you have the budget or the team, you should consider trying to make multiple articles each week.

Regular blog posts are the key to high viewership. Once you map out your schedule, you can fill in your calendar with the exact blog posts you’ll post on each date.

Include information like the blog title, the keywords you want, and a brief description. You should also put in the word count, picture requirements, and any other notes that you want to be included.

Craft an Identity for Your Blog

This can be a little more abstract. But, it’s still important if you want your blog to be successful. Readers will revisit a blog when they know it’s consistent.

Websites that have an article that differs in style, tone, and visuals can alienate readers. So, decide what type of tone you want your blog to have. Maybe it’s serious and informative.

Or, it could be light-hearted and casual. Regardless of what you choose, make sure that all your content is consistent with this identity across the board.
