How to Create a Good Oral Hygiene Routine

Around 46% of adults aged 30 or older in the US have signs of gum disease. This is due to a build-up of plaque that you can prevent by having a good oral hygiene routine.

But creating a good routine that works for you can be easier said than done. There is so much information out there about oral health that it gets confusing and overwhelming.

Lucky for you, this simple guide will tell you everything you need to know to create the perfect oral hygiene routine for you.

Overhaul Your Teeth Brushing Technique

Let’s start with brushing your teeth. This is the backbone of any good oral hygiene routine, and you need to brush them at least twice a day. Brush them before you eat your breakfast and right before you go to sleep.

Use an electric toothbrush with a round head and soft bristles. Don’t press down too hard when you brush, as you might cause your gums to recede. Use a good toothpaste with fluoride to remove all traces of plaque.

Don’t rinse your mouth out with water after you brush. This will wash away the toothpaste that provides a protective layer on your teeth.

Add Floss and Mouthwash to Your Routine

Brushing alone will not give you perfect teeth. You need to look after the rest of your mouth too, as bad bacteria can hide on your tongue and gums.

Use mouthwash once a day but not right before or after you clean your teeth. After lunch is a great time as it will keep your breath fresh in the afternoon.

Use floss, an interdental toothbrush, or similar once a day too. Use it before you clean your teeth, either in the morning or night. Flossing is essential to stop tartar build-up between your teeth.

Remove Bad Habits From Your Lifestyle

Removing bad habits from your life will increase the effectiveness of your new oral hygiene routine. For example, if you smoke, you should take steps to quit. Drinking too much alcohol and eating too much raw sugar can also damage your oral health.

Make Regular Dentist Appointments

As part of your oral hygiene routine, you should see a general dentist on a regular basis. What are general dentists? These are medical professionals that can help you prevent, spot, and treat many dental issues.

Visiting a dentist for a check-up every six to 12 months will decrease your chances of developing a serious oral condition. You can also consult with general dentists about teeth straightening and whitening procedures.

Upgrade Your Smile With a Good Oral Hygiene Routine

You only get one mouth and one set of teeth, so look after them with a good oral hygiene routine. Not only will an effective routine keep your mouth healthy, but it will also give you a sparkling smile too.

Your oral health is only one aspect of your health that you need to look after. Browse our health and lifestyle articles for more tips on fitness, nutrition, and more!
