How to Avoid Boating Accidents

Are you planning on boating this summer?

Enjoy the sunshine and summer air. But, the US Coast Guard sees thousands of boating accidents each year.

Many of these mishaps could have been avoided. Keep reading to learn how you can keep yourself and your passengers safe on the water.

Join a Boating Club

New boaters often do not understand everything involved with owning a boat. This misunderstanding can lead to dangerous mistakes.

When you join a boat club, you surround yourself with experienced boaters who will teach you about safe boating. Plus, they check the vessels to make sure that they are safe for you to use. Join a boat club now to enjoy the water safely!

Take a Safety Course

Don’t just think boating requires basic common sense. Navigating the water presents a unique set of challenges.

Take a boating safety course to help prevent boating accidents. You can never build up too much experience.

In the course, they will reinforce the rules and talk about responsible boat operation. They will also teach you boater etiquette, which will keep you from accidentally upsetting fellow captains.

Watch the Weather

Weather can change quickly. This means water conditions can go from calm to chaotic rather quickly.

Listen to the weather forecast before going out on your boat. Keep the radio tuned in while on the boat so you may listen for changing weather.

If you hear any thunder or lightning, head in. Lightening hitting the water can cause electrocution.

Keep Lifejackets and Safety Equipment Handy

Do not think that good swimmer do not need floatation devices out on open water. About 11 people die from drowning each day in this country.

Your boat should contain one lifejacket per person every time you leave the dock. Children should wear theirs at all times.

You should also keep other safety equipment on the boat in case something happens. Keep a first aid kit, buoys, and tow rope.

Drink Smart

Do not drink and drive your boat under any circumstances. Even one drink may impair your judgment, especially in the hot sun.

Instead, keep lots of water on board so that you remain well hydrated. Dehydration can cause dizziness and lead to accidents similar to the way drinking alcohol can.

Pay Attention

Driving on the open water can feel exhilarating. Add friends and you may forget the seriousness of operating this heavy machine.

Always stay aware of the water around you. Watch out for other boaters and swimmers.

If you do not know the area, watch for it getting too shallow and look out for rocks or anything else you might hit. Ask your passengers to help you keep an eye out until you get the hang of driving a boat.

Avoid Boating Accidents

Know that boating accidents do happen when people do not take the right precautions on the water. Take this seriously and avoid them at all costs. Safety makes for fun boating!
