Norse mythology has proven the most cinematic of the many ancient bodies of myths available to 21st century filmmakers. Egypt, Chinese, Greek, Roman… They’re all magnificent and influential, but there’s something about those old Viking tales. Today’s films cannot get enough. Marvel’s Thor franchise is obviously the most prominent, but Mad Max: Fury Road also found inspiration there, as did 2022’s The Northman. Why? Norse mythos is pure metal, pure power, and an instant way to give an urgent story something essential — gravitas.
