Getting Used to Dentures: 4 Key Tips for an Effortless Transition

Dentures serve as prostheses for missing teeth and are worn by 90% of the edentulous population in the United States. There are approximately 35 million edentulous people (those without any teeth) in the US.

Dentures can be made from a range of different materials, including acrylic, metal, and nylon. They come with a number of benefits, including improving eating capabilities, speech, and self-confidence.

If you are looking for practical advice for getting used to dentures, then this blog post is for you. Here, we will share four key tips on how to get used to dentures.

1. Have Patience

Dentures are a change and do require some time and patience to get used to wearing them. At the start, they will feel like a foreign object, but gradually you will become accustomed to them.

Any unease or embarrassment you might feel while eating or speaking with dentures is normal and will pass after a short period.

If you are experiencing discomfort with your dentures, your dentist may be able to readjust them to relieve this.

2. Sing Your Heart Out!

Getting used to speaking while wearing dentures can take time. At first, it may even feel a little strange. One great way to practice speaking is to sing (of course, we all love having an excuse to sing)!

This is often recommended by speech therapists, especially slow songs where you can focus on forming and pronouncing the words clearly. It’s a fun way to get used to wearing dentures.

3. Take Small Bites

When eating food, it is recommended that you eat slowly after first cutting your food into small pieces. You should also focus on chewing up and down, as opposed to side to side, and chew with both sides of your mouth at the same time.

While you are still getting used to eating with dentures, avoid ordering sticky or crunchy foods in restaurants. It is better to get used to eating these kinds of food at home.

4. Take Care of Your Dentures

Maintenance is an important part of wearing dentures and should be practiced as soon as your dentures are fitted. Your dentist will advise you on the most suitable way to clean your dentures, as there are different types of dentures that are available.

Always be careful when handling your dentures. Remember to soak them overnight to prevent them from drying out. Also, avoid overly hot beverages, as these run the risk of warping your dentures.
