Over 1.2 million new housing units are put into construction every single year. These contractors have to choose the right exterior building materials that are both strong and stylish.
The exterior materials are what will face the harsh elements of the outside, such as wind and rain, so be sure to use materials geared for the climate you’re in. You can choose from impact-resistant windows, hail-resistant roofing, and more.
There are many different types of commercial exterior materials, but they aren’t all made to handle the same kind of conditions.
Here are a few of the different exterior wall materials and their strengths and weaknesses.
Concrete is one of the most common commercial building materials for good reason. It’s strong, can be poured into place, and comes in various forms. You can get it in a lightweight variant as well as waterproof.
Usually, concrete is used in combination with steel for building construction. However, you can use it for your exterior walls for extra fire resistance and impact resistance.
Steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio and is easier to install than concrete. Some of the most common structures you’ll see with metal walls include sheds, prefab homes, and commercial steel buildings.
One of the problems with steel is that it’s susceptible to corrosion and leaking if not installed properly. It also breaks down when exposed to high-temperature levels, such as during a fire.
Everyone loves how a wood cabin looks and feels. Wood is strong, durable, and readily available in the wild. It’s also easy to bend or mold into your desired shape.
There are two main issues to consider, though.
First, wood is susceptible to pests like termites and ants. If left unnoticed, they could compromise the stability of an entire structure.
You’ll also run into problems if you live in an area with forest fires. Wood is highly flammable, even when treated with a fire-resistant coating.
Another natural building resource is stone. Stone is commonly used in walls and flooring, and it’s sold in various colors and textures. More unique finishes like marble greatly increase in price compared to ordinary stone.
Walls made of stone are durable like concrete but have to be installed as slabs. Another material you may consider is brick, which is different from stone in price and durability.
Bricks are less durable but more affordable than stone. In most cases, brick is reinforced with concrete.
You’ll usually see them as an exterior finish rather than something making up an entire wall structure. They also offer a unique appearance, which may increase your home value.
When it comes down to it, people aren’t going to see your internal structures when they first see a new building. The first thing they’ll notice is the exterior building materials.
Those materials will also be their first line of defense against the outdoor elements. Take your time when picking what your walls will be made out of.
