After rest, ice is the second most important aspect, and then you need to start looking at compression and elevation to ensure that you are doing all you can. You should avoid applying heat during the first three days after the injury occurs. 

Three Days to a Week Later

After the initial injury has been given the proper period to start its recovery process, you should hopefully find yourself in a situation in which the pain, swelling, and bruising start to all subside. You may begin to notice changes in the color of your bruising. Once the swelling has gone down, you may find that heat packs can give you some relief from any further pain that you are experiencing. You can begin lightly stretching the area and working on mobility, but not to the point that you are pushing it too much and experiencing pain. 

After a Month

Once more time has passed, you may still experience some pain and tenderness, which can be relieved by ice and heat pads. You can also continue with your moderate stretching and muscle-building exercises to ensure that you have the best possible chance of strengthening the area as much as possible. When you go back to playing once again, it may be the case that you do so with the aid of support around the affected area.
