On the eastern half of campus lies Plemmons Student Union, Roess Dining Hall, Carol Grotnes Belk Library, and Information Commons, as well as two communities of residence halls. On game days, App State police and traffic attendants direct vehicle traffic along Stadium and Jack Branch Drive until exiting Stadium Deck.
Kidd Brewer Stadium
Appalachian State’s Kidd Brewer Stadium – commonly called The Rock – has become one of the most challenging places for opposing college football teams. Their Mountaineers boast a 263-77-5 home record there, and strong crowd support has been evident this season; for instance, Wednesday’s game against Coastal Carolina attracted 31,061 spectators, while Marshall brought 28,377 on November 26.
Since 2017, a clear bag policy has been in place at the stadium to enhance patron safety and expedite stadium entry by decreasing time spent searching for bags. This approach is consistent with other NCAA FBS institutions and NFL franchises.
Appalachian State University’s End Zone Facility is the iconic new entrance to Kidd Brewer Stadium and houses athletics, events, club amenities, and a ticket office in its 88,000-square-foot LEED Silver Certified building. Adjacent to it lies a plaza dedicated to former head coach Jerry Moore, which acts as the starting point for AppalCART on game days – open and available for fans of all kinds!
Turchin Center for the Visual Arts
Appalachian State University’s Turchin Center for Visual Arts stands out from its competition as a world-class visual arts facility in Western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee, and Southwestern Virginia with two wings of exhibition and support space as well as its Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing – offering students and the community alike the power of art as a healing force. It features two wings for exhibition and support space, and its Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing has multifaceted programs to experience its impactful power for themselves or offered here to share all these attributes of art as powerfully and joyfully as ever!
The center hosts numerous exhibits that address an array of themes. Laura Sharrow’s Balancing Act exhibition uses skeletal figures and haunting faces to examine articles related to balance, mortality, and current political events from a historical viewpoint.
Capturing a Transient World explores the ecological tension between man and nature on Louisiana’s Barrier Islands. This work examines coastal erosion’s adverse impact on this region’s culture and way of life. Furthermore, another gallery features works by innovative encaustic painters utilizing unique approaches to this medium.
Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts
The Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts hosts world-class performances and art exhibitions of international caliber. This venue features orchestra and balcony seating that can hold more than 1,673 individuals, children’s programming, showcases, as well as Esperanza Spalding, Boz Scaggs, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, being among some of its many acclaimed performers who have graced its stage.
At this venue, events produced by the university’s theater and music departments take place, but it also hosts community performances such as APPlause! Series and the Appalachian Summer Festival. Additionally, Smith Gallery exhibits local student artwork.

Trivette Dining Hall
The dining hall provides stunning views of Tomlinson Park and features an Asian Bar, hot foods, pizza, deli salad bars, desserts, soups, and more – welcoming students, faculty, and staff alike to enjoy their meals here. In addition, this facility houses McAlister’s Select Deli.
App State’s Campus Dining initiated and sponsored this project. Renovations at Roess and Trivette Dining Hall will accommodate App State’s All Access swipe-based meal plan model introduced in fall 2022; upgrades will improve functionality, efficiency, and student experience.
The renovated space offers a welcome change from its previous drab look, with modern materials and finishes reminiscent of retail restaurants, creating a light-filled, comfortable environment. The dining hall was designed to maximize sustainability, functionality, and efficiency, featuring a “Simple Servings Station,” offering meals free from gluten and the top nine allergens, along with open-air cafe seating areas, lower part redesign of Roess, and additional seating areas.
Quinn Recreation Center
Quinn Recreation Center is a student-centric facility that provides fitness, wellness, and socialization opportunities for students, faculty, and staff alike. The center houses a multi-purpose room, indoor track, volleyball courts, tennis courts, an outdoor basketball court, a large fitness room, and an App State Climbing Wall with beginner bouldering and roped climbing.
Quinn Center provides recreational activities and educational programs that address social justice concerns, reaching out to diverse local communities. One such opportunity is through a partnership with Stritch Community Service Organization, which partners with Quinn Center to offer tutoring and mentoring for youth living in the Proviso neighborhood.
Quinn Springs picnic site features a covered pavilion that accommodates up to 50 people, equipped with small and large charcoal grills and waterless restroom facilities. Popular spots for family reunions and church outings, it provides recreational passes available through payroll deduction for students, faculty, and staff as well as their family members and current employees.
Sanford Hall
Sanford Hall is home to the Communication Arts Department and, according to some students and faculty, some supernatural forces. Offering courses in theatre, communication studies, multimedia communications journalism, and public relations, as well as studio space for Channel 99 and WVGS studio production and hands-on production equipment, Sanford Hall offers something for all interests of communication arts students and faculty alike.
Now, thanks to an ambitious renovation effort, dimly lit corridors, hot and stuffy classrooms, and a broken elevator are a thing of the past. The renovated building now features 450 energy-saving windows, two elevators, modernized lecture halls and classrooms, and double elevators for smooth operations.
Sanford Hall, situated on Greene Street and offering suites, provides residents with living areas, kitchens, washers and dryers, bathrooms, and study rooms in each suite. Each suite also includes WiFi and cable television connectivity, community laundry, and study lounge access through Cane Cards swiped with Cane cards for residents; students use a computer lab and classrooms on the first floor during class times. Yosef Statue
Yosef (an acronym of mountain speak for “yourself”) is Appalachian State University’s beloved mascot in Boone, North Carolina. Yosef is a cartoon-centric symbol that inspires school spirit and motivates students to give their best for Apps. Yosef has undergone multiple transformations over time, as seen in yearbooks and newspaper clippings; here’s an inside look at his journey from yearbook placeholder to beloved Appalachian icon!
According to App State Athletics, Yosef first made his debut in Rhododendron’s 1942 Dan’l Boone “Yoseff” section to fill a space and make the yearbook symmetrical. He was depicted with a bushy black beard, suspenders, and a 10-gallon hat while smoking his signature corncob pipe.
After an App State athletics committee made changes in 1983 to its logo, replacing more realistic mountain men with the cartoon-centric Yosef we know today, the difference was met with overwhelming support, and Yosef quickly became the primary mascot of App State University. Due to his widespread appeal and incredible popularity among fans alike, in 2013, Yosef’s older costume made its merchandise return and has come to be known by some fans as Vintage Yosef.
Sanford Center
The Sanford Center is an entertainment venue that hosts various events, such as concerts, hockey games, trade shows, and trade fair exhibits. Additionally, it serves as a home for Bemidji State men’s and women’s hockey teams and features an advanced LED video display system designed and installed by Brookings-based Daktronics.
At the arena, guests are treated to luxurious suites that accommodate 16 or 20 people and can be purchased seasonally or per event. Amenities included are VIP parking, an elevator leading directly into their suite, and private restroom access; plus, suite holders receive an ice chest, beverage cart, and flat-screen television for their stay.
