7 Steps To ADU Development

Building an ADU on your property can provide you with many benefits, including increased property value and rental income. However, doing so is not always easy. Therefore, if you are looking to build an ADU yourself, here are the 7 main steps to ADU development you need to be aware of.

1 ADU Costs And Budget

The first step is gathering all your ADU costs and creating a project budget. Consider every step of ADU development and have an ADU professional help you estimate your costs and financing accurately.

2 Feasibility

The second step is determining what is feasible to build on your property, given your local and state governments’ regulations. This step involves conducting a feasibility study with a site map and research with your planning department.

3 Design Plans

Next, it is time to create floor plans and 3D renderings to visualize how your ADU will look once it is built. The more intricate your design, the more expensive your project will be.

4 Construction Plans

It is time to issue construction drawing plans and calculations with designs in place. This will involve things like architectural drawings, energy calculations, and more.

5 Permits

Once your plans are complete, you can issue them to your local planning board for approval. They will review them and give them the necessary corrections until you get them right. That is why we recommended working with design and planning professionals to make the permitting process quicker by not having to make as many or any corrections to your plans.

6 Hiring A Contractor

Next, create a scope of work for your project and get estimates from different contractors. Make sure you choose someone with experience building ADUs who is fully licensed and insured. We also recommend working with someone with at least 3 years of experience.

7 Construction

Finally, it is time to acquire your raw materials and start construction. Once construction is complete and you have passed all your inspections, you can receive your certificate of occupancy.
