3 Tips for Buying Broadcasting Equipment

Do you need to start broadcasting engaging, professional-looking videos?

Buying the right broadcasting equipment is crucial to the success of your programs. Without the proper equipment, you might struggle with technical difficulties. Worse, your programs may fail to get consistent viewership because they look unprofessional.

So, knowing how to select the best broadcasting and communications equipment should serve as a priority. Below, we’ll get into 3 tips for buying the right technology. Keep reading to learn more and start selecting the best broadcast equipment!

1. Select a Great Camera

The quality of your broadcast will come down to having the right camera. Before you shoot your videos, you’ll need to make sure you have a camera that has been created for broadcasting.

To figure out which cameras have broadcasting capabilities, look for ones with a clean HDMI or SDI connection. If you don’t have a clean connection, the video will display icons while it broadcasts.

You should also figure out how many frames per second your camera needs to have. The higher the frames per second (or frame rate), the more movement your camera can capture.

For still shots, you’ll need a standard frame rate of around 24-30 frames per second. Broadcasts that contain a lot of movement should have cameras with 60 frames per second. Otherwise, the video might appear choppy.

2. Buy at Least 3 Lights

If you’re going to broadcast stationary subjects, you should buy at least 3 lights.

Subjects show up best on camera when they’re lit by a key light, a fill light, and a backlight. The key light sits at a 45-degree angle from the subject. It shines a strong light on them. The fill light is on the other side of the camera, giving off a gentler light. The backlight is positioned behind the subject. The light it emits helps them stand out from the background.

You might also need additional lights if you use a green screen. In order to work, green screens need to remain evenly lit. Otherwise, the computer might interpret shadows as different colors. When this happens, you might notice fuzziness on the screen.

3. Purchase Reliable Microphones

Sound quality is a huge aspect of video production. The better your microphones, the more clearly your audience will hear the people in the broadcast.

This is especially important if your video features people talking straight to the camera. If you want the microphones to not appear obvious, invest in hidden lapel mics.

Larger microphones come in several different varieties. Dynamic microphones are durable and work well with many types of projects. Condenser microphones record ambient noise well. Ribbon microphones were popular in the 20th century. Yet, their fragility and high price tag make them less common choices for broadcasters today.
